Location of Mount Vesuvius
Address: Vesuvius National Park (Parco Nazionale del Vesuvio), Piazzale di Quota 1000, 80056 Ercolano, Naples, Italy.
Closest landmark: the archaeological site of Herculaneum in the town of Ercolano, roughly a 30-minute drive down the mountain road from the crater trailhead.
Mount Vesuvius rises directly above the Bay of Naples between Naples, Ercolano and Pompeii. The walking route to the crater, known as the Gran Cono trail, begins at Piazzale di Quota 1000, a car park about 1,000 metres above sea level reached via the provincial road that climbs from Ercolano. This full-day tour departs from central Naples, meeting outside the Starhotels Terminus hotel opposite Napoli Centrale station, before continuing to Pompeii and then up the mountain to the Gran Cono trailhead.
